A Few Things For The First Hour Of Class:
1. When taking down the quote of the day, please be sure to not only take down the quote, but also the person to whom it is attributed. That's kind of important.
2. Keep in mind that once every two weeks, we will play some type of word game to review the words of the day from the previous two weeks. I recommend writing a sentence in your journal that uses the word of the day immediately.
3. Be thoughtful and conscientious as you transcribe both the quote and word of the day to your daily reflection journal. Often, the quote of the day will provide context or clues about what's to happen during that class period. If you're the type that likes to know, look to the quote.
TRIVIA (please answer and comment in your reflection journal): What is a quote at the beginning of a novel/short story/essay/literary work called? What is it's function?
DURING THE FIRST HOUR OF CLASS, please be working to complete BOTH your response to Sir Ken Robinson's lecture and your Beginner's Portfolio. Keep in mind that both tasks ought to be completed by the end of the first hour of class. While you're working independently, I'll be conferencing with each of you at my desk to hear more about your ideas for Daily Practice and how you intend to begin your disciplined practice today (e.g. what tools you need, what you'll be focusing on, etc.)
PLEASE BE PREPARED TO ANSWER "WHY" QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO BE DOING, WHAT MATERIALS YOU'LL NEED TO DO IT, WHAT YOU'LL POST EACH DAY, AND THE WORK THAT'S INSPIRING YOUR PRACTICE.
A Few Things For The Second Hour Of Class:
Today is the first day that you'll spend on your Daily Practice. In full disclosure, I view this as a long term class project in true PBL style because your daily attempt will result in the full spectrum of possibilities of PBL: commitment, self-monitoring, brainstorming, successes, failures, re-do's, reflection, etc. Let me say this clearly: THIS IS A PROJECT. ;^)
Before we set the timer to begin, we'll take a few minutes to set some class norms around this time. One norm that is non-negotiable is respectful quiet. Please respect your peers and surroundings by allowing everyone the space they need to do whatever it is that they are working on. If you choose to use headphones, please keep the volume to yourself. This ought to be Zen-like.
In fact, let's do a bit of mindfulness right now... (3 min)
