STARTER: NTC Reflection

(Baseliners- take a screen shot of your app, add it to your RJ, and talk a bit about what trends you're noticing. Are you surprised by your usage?)

  1. What do you miss the most?
  2. How do you find yourself filling your time?
  3. Are you finding this rewarding?  Frustrating?  Both?
  4. What differences do you notice in yourself? If anything

SEMINAR GUIDING QUESTIONS:
for "Are Smartphones Really Destroying The Adolescent Brain?"
  • What was the tone/tenor of the article? Earnest? Sarcastic? Irreverent? What did the tone add to the piece?
  • What is the difference between a how a smartphone is used and when it is used? Why would that distinction matter?
  • What does Flora mean when she writes, "The call of the phone is cognitively loud, even when it's turned off?" (p.34)
  • Are we too quick to look at the deficits of smartphone usage and not quick enough to look at the benefits? (on page 35, Jay Giedd Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at UC San Diego says, "...even if their prose and grammar [in texts] are not what we'd like them to be... what are their brain better at instead? Sorting through texts? Keeping track of more friends?")
  • What visceral and intellectual responses did you have throughout the course of your reading?

for "Have Smartphones Destroyed A Generation?"
  • Does the allure of independence hold any sway (rule; control) in your life?
  • What is your reaction to the sentence, "The arrival of the smartphone has radically changed every aspect of teenagers’ lives, from the nature of their social interactions to their mental health"?
  • Does Wenge make a compelling argument for smartphones being to blame for the iGen to be on the "brink of the worst mental health crisis in a decades"?
  • In light of Wenge's argument, is AHS doing you a disservice to ask that you have a laptop for class and homework?
  • What visceral and intellectual responses did you have throughout the course of your reading?

for class wide discussion (if you're absent, please answer these as well...)
  • Give an example of evidence being used well. Explain.
  • Give an example of evidence being used poorly. Explain.
  • Did you notice one type of evidence (statistics, testimony, examples/case studies) being used poorly more often than the others?
  • We've hammered this Solitude stuff, but I've got to know- can solitude( quietness, being alone with your thoughts, etc.) really be achieved if there's a smartphone within 25 feet of you?

Turn your PREP DOCS in!!! Either share them with me, or hand me your paper copy. MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS ON IT!!!
