Email:  cyle.talley@animashighschool.com
This is by FAR the best way to get in touch with me. I will do my best to respond promptly, though in the case of an absence for baseball, it may take a bit longer. It's impolite to email in the dugout.

Office Hours:  By appointment only.  Email me or stop by my room to make an appointment!

Class Materials
  1. Laptop for word processing and internet.
  2. Some method for organizing papers and handouts
  3. Notebook (for notes, brainstorms, etc.)

  6. Materials for Daily Practice
  7. Your best self

How To Turn Your Work In
Your Reflection Journal is for Quote/Word of the Day and the starter. I will check it every week and give you credit accordingly. It ought to be labeled thusly:
S(1 or 2- this denotes your section)YourNameAssignmentName

Example: S1CyleTalleyReflectionJournal

If it's not labeled, I can't find it, so I can't give you credit. If it's labeled and it's labeled incorrectly, well, there's just not an excuse for that, so I won't give you credit.

Everything else will be via Google Classroom. I reserve the right to ask for a hard copy. I will give you plenty of notice and will expect it (completed, of course) as soon as you walk into class.

Assessment
You love grades. I get it. They serve as a bar, as motivation, as a way to say "Ha ha, loser!" to your friends. But if I grade you on creativity and risk-taking, I've disincentivized your willingness to try, and I REALLY want you to try.

Individual assignments will be marked "Turned In", "Missing" or, in some cases, "Turned In, But Incomplete". These are should be self-explanatory.

For big assignments such as essays, projects, etc., I will be giving you feedback in the form of questions. "How did you arrive at the final product?", "What are you proud of?", etc.

At the conclusion of the term, you and I will conference on what your final grade for the class ought to be based on the following:
  • Effort/Engagement
  • Attendance/Presence
  • Willingness to Risk/Growth
Norms and Expectations
We will read and write every day.  Seriously.  Every day.  Please attempt to keep whining about this immutable fact to a minimum.

We will converse every day. Be present, be engaged, be appropriate, and as Vonnegut says, "There's only one rule that I know of, babies—God d**n it, you've got to be kind."

Minimum requirements for feedback:  I will not look at your work if it does not meet the minimum guidelines for the assignment (length, number of sources, etc.) or if there are spelling mistakes or any other errors that you should easily catch yourself. Proofread all of your work closely.

We will be nice to each other. Remember what Vonnegut said.

Side conversations.  I understand that you want to talk with your friends, and that's fine, but more often than not, it infringes on and affects your classmates. Be respectful, please.

We will use technology respectfully and responsibly. Don't distract yourself, classmates, or me with your phones, laptops, headphones, or music during class. When we're discussing as a class, headphones need to be off (one earbud in and one out is not off). It's a matter of kindness, attention, and presence. Three strikes and you're out (i.e. you'll be banned from having headphones in class). Music will be allowed on headphones during independent work time, but please protect your ears and keep it to a reasonable volume.

Down time:  Although my aim is to keep you all very busy, there may be some down time.  No computer games, Youtube-a-thons, etc.  Please use your time wisely.  There is almost always something productive you could be doing with your time. Don't know what to do? I link all sorts of info, interestings, and weirds throughout my DP. Have a look. Do it, you won't.

Lateness: I check attendance during the first 3 minutes of each class period every day.  If you're late and unexcused, there will be natural consequences including any homework due at the beginning of class being considered late.

Please note: You CAN and will be marked late if you don't get back from break on time. Just saying.

Food and Beverages: If the drink you want to consume has less than 10 grams of sugar (total- not per serving), you're good. More than 10? That's a big fat no. If you have a beverage that violates this rule, I'll ask you to throw it out. You will not be allowed to go out into the hallway and finish it.

You may consume only non-messy/smelly snacks during class time. There is a distinction between a snack and a meal.  My class is not the time to eat lunch. Oh, and all snacks consumed in class are subject to teacher tax.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do I do if I am late to class?
Come in quietly.  Do not disturb others or try to make some flashy, fashionably-late entrance.  Check the DP and read the daily blog.  If you require further clarification, ask a neighbor.  You should come see me only after doing all of the above.

What do I do if I am sick or miss school?
If you miss school it is your responsibility to read the blog, stay abreast of our course material, and contact me with questions.

Can I get extra credit?
No.

Do you really love the Cubs that much?
Yes.

What if I have questions about my grade?
Please contact me directly with any questions about your assignments and grades.  Please do not have your parents contact me regarding your grades until you have asked the questions first, via email or in person.  If your parents still have questions after you have talked to me and reported back, I would be happy to address their concerns at that point.

When are assignments due?
Assignments are due in the first minute of class.  Anything turned in later than one minute after class has begun will be docked an immediate 20%.   No late work will be accepted after a week has passed.  Make sure all printing is done before class.

What if I can’t complete an assignment on time?
I hope to prepare you for Lori's class and college after that. As such, I will only be granting extensions to students who have an exceptional circumstance, AND who ask as far in advance of the deadline as is possible in their situation. Do NOT come to me the day the assignment is due.

Things that do NOT qualify as exceptional circumstances include, but are not limited to:  sports absences, procrastination, a job, minor colds/injuries, failure to understand the assignment directions that we went over in class, work/deadlines in other classes, family trips/vacations, general varieties of teenage angst.

What happens if I plagiarize?
Any assignments that are plagiarized will result in a zero for that assignment, and will be reported to Sean and Libby.
